Mayors For Meals

AUSTIN MAYOR LEE LEFFINGWELL SET TO DELIVER MEALS TO MEALS ON WHEELS  CLIENTS AS PART OF NATIONAL CAMPAIGN

AUSTIN, TX— On Wednesday, March 21, 2012, Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell will spend his lunch hour delivering hot, nutritious meals to several Meals on Wheels and More clients.

Mayor Leffingwell is just one of hundreds of mayors from across the country, taking part in the annual Mayors for Meals event.  This campaign is designed to highlight the mission of Meals on
Wheels programs to provide food and other services to elderly or disabled people who are homebound.

In 2011, Meals on Wheels and More distributed close to 1 million meals to individuals suffering from hunger who have no way of accessing food on their own. Demands for our services continue to grow at a rapid rate as our population ages, and more people move into Central Texas. By 2020, it is expected that 214,000 residents of Central Texas will be 65 or older.

“Mayor Leffingwell truly cares about the most vulnerable members of our community,” said Dan Pruett, CEO and President of Meals on Wheels and More. “We are so grateful to him for shining a light on the need that exists in our city.”

Members of the media are invited to follow Mayor Leffingwell on his route.

Summer 2011 Volunteer Needs

Currently 40 routes lack drivers and more volunteer cancellations are expected

Meals on Wheels and More currently has 40 open routes across Central Texas and, with summer approaching, more volunteer cancellations are expected in the coming weeks.

Open routes are routes that do not have a volunteer driver assigned to them. When routes cannot be covered by volunteers, Meals on Wheels and More must rely on paid staff drivers, which in turn increases administrative and gas costs.

Seasonally, this is a time of year when MOWAM sees one of the highest rates of volunteer turnover, as people cancel their service commitments due to summer vacations and heat concerns. Meals on Wheels and More relies on volunteers to deliver 90 percent of the 1 million meals it distributes annually.

“The summer season is always a challenge for us,” said Dan Pruett, CEO & President of Meals on Wheels and More. “We’re lucky to have fantastic volunteer support here in Austin, because without it we wouldn’t be able to serve as many people as we do. Right now, we need more members of the community to come forward and volunteer to help their neighbors. ”

Meals on Wheels and More is looking for both regular and substitute meal-delivery drivers this summer. Drivers are most needed in North Austin and in areas East of I-35.

Gas Prices Could Create a $25,000 Budget Shortfall for MOWAM

As gas prices inch toward $4 a gallon in Central Texas, we at Meals on Wheels and More are expecting to see a budget impact of close to $25,000 this year.

Recently, we entered a contract with the City of Austin to provide congregate meals for seven different senior congregate meal centers, which has necessitated the addition of two new vehicles to our operations and will create an additional 100 miles of travel for our drivers each day.

Currently, Meals on Wheels and More maintains a fleet of 19 vans, which are deployed daily to deliver meals to our 14 meal-distribution sites across the city, seven city congregate meal sites, five county congregate meal sites, and provide meals through our Country Wheels program to individuals living in rural areas of Bastrop, Travis, Lee, Fayette, Caldwell, Hays, and Williamson counties.

Altogether, Meals on Wheels and More vehicles log an average of 4,300 miles each week.

Currently, we rely on volunteers to deliver 90 percent of the meals we provide through our home delivered meal program. Without adequate volunteer support, delivery of meals would fall to staff drivers and further increase our gas costs.

We know that all of our volunteers are affected by the rising costs, and we are thankful to all volunteers who continue to deliver meals despite gas prices.

May and June are also high months of volunteer turnover and cancellations, as people take leave for summer vacations and the heat.

For more information, please call Sarah Andrews at 512-476-6325 x. 131.

MOWAM Waiting List Doubles in Size

April 19, 2011 - The waiting list for homebound individuals in need of food assistance from Meals on Wheels and More has grown to almost 300 people, doubling in size since it was first created nine months ago.

A dramatic increase in the need for home delivered meal services in the Austin community necessitated Meals on Wheels and More to create a waiting list for meal services last summer. Reductions in state funding this year are expected to further impact the waiting list.

“We are getting many calls from people who are finding themselves in desperate situations with nowhere to turn,” said Dan Pruett, CEO and President of Meals on Wheels and More. “So many people in our community are suffering alone and in silence, and we need more people to step up to the plate and make a commitment to help their neighbors who are struggling with hunger.”

MOWAM case workers actively monitor the conditions of those on the waiting list to ensure that those most in need are the first to receive services.

This is the first time in over seven years that MOWAM has had a waiting list for services. Currently, MOWAM distributes more than 1 million meals to homebound elderly and disabled individuals in Central Texas.

Meals on Wheels and More is seeking support from the community in order to move people off the waiting list faster and sustain services to existing clients.

More information about our waiting list.

Meals on Wheels to deliver millionth meal of the year

AUSTIN, Texas On September 22, 2009, Meals on Wheels and More of Austin will deliver its millionth meal of the year, marking the first time in the organization’s 37-year history that it has delivered one million meals within an annual time period.

This growth in meal distribution is attributed to a rapidly-growing client base. In 2008, MOWAM added an average of 30 new clients per month to our services. This year, that average has grown to 100 new clients per month.

“The fact that we will prepare and distribute 1 million meals this year is a true testament to the need that exists in our city, and it speaks volumes about how many elderly and disabled men, women, and children in Central Texas have little to no access to healthy food,” said Dan Pruett, CEO and President of Meals on Wheels and More. “We are blessed to have supporters who have enabled us to increase our service capacity this year, but we are troubled to see so many people suffering from hunger, especially when we know that there are more people out there who need our help.”

This is the millionth meal of Meals on Wheels and More’s fiscal year, which runs from October 1 to September 30.

Mayor Pro Tem Mike Martinez will help MOWAM commemorate the day by meal managing at MOWAM’s Central Kitchen headquarters on Tuesday.

Longtime MOWAM volunteer Rufus Woody, who has been volunteering since 1984, will deliver the millionth meal along with Reetu Jain, a Meals on Wheels Board Member who has been volunteering for one year. Media is invited to attend and follow along on the route.

For more information about our millionth meal event, please contact Sarah Andrews at 512-476-6325 x. 131 or 617-921-2092.

AGENDA

WHAT:           Meals on Wheels and More delivers its millionth meal of the year for the first time ever.

WHERE:       MOWAM Central Kitchen, 3227 E. 5th Street, Austin, TX 78702

WHEN:          Tuesday, September 22, 2009

10:30 a.m.Mayor Pro Tem Mike Martinez arrives to meal manage. Members of the media are invited to come and set up during this time period, as well.

10:45 a.m. – Volunteers Rufus Woody and Reetu Jain arrive. They will drive a route together and deliver the millionth meal. Members of the media are invited to follow along on this route.

10:45 a.m. – MOWAM CEO Dan Pruett will be on hand to say a few words and thank volunteers who are delivering that day.

In December 2008, MOWAM broke ground on a building expansion project that will allow us to expand our kitchen and Client Services department. Based on population projections from city demographers, we expect that we will need to prepare and distribute 2.1 million meals by the year 2020. To accommodate the growing demand, we must expand our facilities now. To learn more about the building project, visit www.compassionbuilds.org.

Q: In friendship, what is the most important quality to have and look for in someone else and how can I recognize this?

Dee Clair:  Friends need to be dependable and people you can trust. For example, when one makes plans to meet with a friend, don’t be a “no-show”. Call first and let your friend know you have to cancel.

Grannie Pat:  Look for someone who cares about people! Someone who is clean in mind and spirit and adventuresome! Some friends will be there for life, others are just friends in certain situations. As the saying goes, “Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other’s gold.” Your friends may be people of a different race or religion, but if they are dedicated to you they will be a good friend. And remember, don’t be afraid to make the first move.

Granny C: Look for people you can trust. Listen to them as you get to know them and practice trust in your own self.

Q: In choosing my college major and career, should I focus on finding a job that I love or a job that makes money?

Grannie Pat: It would be nice if they were one in the same. I was lucky in that I was able to make an adequate living in a field that I loved and felt useful. Go for the major that you love and minor in making a living - they may turn out to be the same! Do not have fear. Venture out! Don’t think you have to do the same thing all of your life. Our interests change. Times move fast!

Lil C: My knee-jerk response is go for the money! But my final thought is to focus on a career that you love and are passionate about. You will be more productive that way and have a wonderful adventure.

Q: What do you think about today’s music?

Grannie Pat: Some of the music today is fine, just like when I was growing up and Elvis was coming on the scene. Some songs are better than others and easier to listen to. Don’t care for heavy metal, myself! I think that songs with obscenities should be banned, as well as songs that demean women. I do, however, like some rap and break dancing. Those genres have a lot of stories to tell and are very athletic. I also think the Jonas Brothers have helped to bring some civility to the teen scene, along with Christian rock.

MOWAM Responds to Swine Flu

In response to the incidences of Swine Flu in Texas and across the country, Meals on Wheels and More has taken action to ensure that our clients, volunteers, and staff members stay safe and healthy…

In response to the incidences of Swine Flu in Texas and across the country, Meals on Wheels and More has taken action to ensure that our clients, volunteers, and staff members stay safe and healthy.

In addition to monitoring state and local information about Swine Flu, we are also closely monitoring our client and volunteer population. We are sending letters to all of our volunteers and clients asking them to alert us if they become ill so that we can make other arrangements for meal delivery. We are also distributing flu-prevention resources to them.

We do not foresee any closure of our facilities or interruption of services and have not received any reports of Swine Flu infection from staff members, clients,  or volunteers.

In the event that the situation changes, we will provide updated information on our web site.

Enviro Media Earth Day

EnviroMedia Social Marketing staff will deliver meals, energy efficient light bulbs and tips

A hot meal isn’t the only thing Meals on Wheels volunteers will deliver this Earth Day. Staffers from a local environmental firm will take and install energy efficient lights at local apartment complexes. The house calls include the compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) installations, walking through the home targeting areas where energy can be saved, and providing a tip card about energy conservation.

EnviroMedia Social Marketing is partnering with Meals on Wheels to assist the residents about ways to be energy efficient and save money.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, if every home in America replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified bulb, it would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes for a year and save more than $600 million in annual energy costs. It would also prevent greenhouse gases, which contribute to climate change, equivalent to the emissions of more than 800,000 cars. The EPA-recommended bulbs are also designed to last longer than traditional bulbs - more than seven years.

EnviroMedia employees, who regularly participate in environmental and public health initiatives, are passionate about educating others, especially on Earth Day. Past EnviroMedia Earth Day activities have included educating consumers about “vampire electricity,” when appliances suck energy by being plugged in but not in use; removing invasive plant species from the Austin Greenbelt; and distributing litterbags to passing motorists at City Hall. The key is to arm consumers with easy-to-do changes that save money and help the environment.

Pet Wellness Fair 2009

The cute, cuddly, and, some might say, life-saving pets of dozens of homebound Meals on Wheels and More clients will receive free spay and neuter services and health checks this Saturday, April 4th at the 2nd Annual Pet Wellness Fair.

This year the fair will help 131 pets - almost three times more than the number helped last year!

The Pet Wellness Fair is sponsored each year by Meals on Wheels and More, Emancipet, Blue Dog Rescue, and Town Lake Animal Center. Volunteers offer to transport clients’ pets from their homes to Emancipet where the pets are examined and treated.

“Pets provide such valuable companionship for our clients, who are isolated, alone and not mobile enough to get their pets the healthcare they need,” said Dan Pruett, CEO & President of Meals on Wheels and More. “We want to make sure these pets stay healthy so they can continue to bring joy to the lives of our clients. The sheer growth of this program in just one year is testament to the need that exists in our community.”

Many medical studies show that pets improve the health of their owners by decreasing incidences of stress and depression. The MOWAM clients served through this program are at high risk for both because of their isolation.

Members of the media are invited to cover the fair and even ride along with a volunteer on a pet pick-up. *** PLEASE NOTE: Pick-up times for client pets will vary. Please call in advance to schedule a time to interview a client if you are interested.

WHAT: 2nd Annual Pet Wellness Fair sponsored by Meals on Wheels and More, Emancipet, Blue Dog Rescue, and Town Lake Animal Center

WHERE: Emancipet, 7201 Levander Loop, Building J

WHEN:           SATURDAY, April 4th

7:30 a.m. - volunteers begin picking up pets

8 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. - Spay/neuter pets begin arriving at Emancipet

10 a.m. - Pets begin arriving for wellness checks*

Wisdom In Their Own Words 2

Meals on Wheels and More Time Warner Cable, Texas Crew and Dan Rather teamed up to help tell the life stories of seven MOWAM clients, who have lived through some of the most trying times of the past century and whose words provide a unique and important perspective on the history of Austin and the importance of services like Meals on Wheels and More in so many people’s lives.

Recently, the film was awarded 2 Telly Awards for documentary and editing.

Below meet some of the wonderful people who helped bring this project to life!

Dedicated in memory of Hervey Lazenby and George Strawsser

"Mamma" Ann White MOWAM clientAnn White  Born April 14, 1931

“Momma” White is a remarkable woman whose life’s work was predestined by the death of her mother at a very young age. She was separated from her brothers after the death of her mother and went to live with her “aunties.” She recalls that they treated her like a slave and she fiercely missed her brothers. She couldn’t wait to be reunited with them. When the family was reunited a year later, Ann was determined to always keep them together.

As an adult with children of her own, Momma White knew all to well about the heartache of separation from family based on her childhood. She reached out and opened her arms and her home to other children who needed a stable force in their lives. Momma White and Daddy White raised 220 foster children. When her birth children asked if their foster brothers and sisters could stay with them, Momma White replied, “we do the best we can for the children, and then we send them on their way.” The children in the neighborhood still come to Momma White’s door and ask if she will play horseshoes or red light, green light with them in the backyard. At age 78, she is still devoting her life to the children in her neighborhood.

Fannie Simnacher MOWAM clientFrances Simnacher Born 8/14/1911

Frances has lived along side the Colorado River all of her life. In her youth, she learned how to swim in the river. She was a superior swimmer and could out swim all her peers.

Frances said that her family was considered “well-off.” Her parents owned a home and acres of land in southeast Austin where she is currently living. Her grandfather owned a mercantile business in Austin and helped his children and grandchild survive through the Great Depression. Her grandparents parceled out land for disenfranchised blacks even though many of their neighbors did not like the idea.

Frances walks slowly across the family’s homestead admiring her surroundings and watching the flow of the river. She uses a cane for support. Looking at this scenic view is like stepping back in time because little has changed over the past 98 years except for the growth of a few more trees. When asked how it feels to walk this land again, she comments, “it feels like home.”

Mitchell Mays MOWAM clientMitchell Mays Born May 31, 1912

A war hero, a husband, a father, a musician, a cook, a friend, a distinguished man, Mr. Mitchell Mays has faced an array of challenges as well as triumphs and at age 97, he has a story to tell. Here is a small piece of that story…

Mitchell Mays was born in 1912 in Round Rock, Texas, 20 miles north east of Austin, and moved to Austin a few years later. Three major floods hit Austin in the 1930’s, and Mitchell learned first-hand why the region was known as “Flash Flood Alley.” The first job he held was “the worst job” of his entire life… At the age of 16, he asked the Mayor of Austin for a job. The Mayor charged Mitchell with retrieving salvage from rushing floodwaters. Even though he didn’t know how to swim and was afraid of water, it was the Great Depression and times were tough, so he had no choice but to take the job. He saved his money and bought his first car in 1931. It was unimaginable: “no black boys had cars”, but he did. He fought in World War II and the Korean War. Mitchell was also a blues musician in Austin, playing the “Southern Circuit.”

Hervey Lazenby MOWAM client

Hervey Lazenby Born 1919

Mr. Lazenby lived through many important historical and social events during his life, including World War I, World War II, Vietnam, desegregation, and the Iraq War. Throughout his life, he was a champion for civil rights and for God. “I would like to see a time when we can really forget about race and gender ... God created us all,” he said. “Why some are one color and some another, I don’t know. But I think there is a purpose for it as he saw it ... he created us in his image, but right now I do not think we have a clear image of who he is. That’s our doing, not his.”

Mr. Lazenby passed away in 2007, but said during the making of the film that he’d led a great life. “I am just gkad I’ve lived these 88 years,” he said. “There have been so many changes in my lifetime, and I believe they’ve all been for the best.”

George Strawsser MOWAM clientGeorge Strawsser Born 1923

During WWII, George Strawser served in the National Guard and paid a big price. After being shot in the leg in Africa, Strawser was captured and held as a POW in Germany for three years. He almost didn’t make it. After initially being shot, he had to march for three days on a wounded leg. He credits his friend Murray with getting him through it.

“He saved my life, there’s no doubt about that ... he lent me his shoulder for a long, long time, for three days,” he said. “I could hardly walk and if you fell out of line they just simply shot you ... I don’t know how he carried me that far, but he did.”

Active with other WWII Veterans in the Austin-area, Mr. Strawser has fought to keep his story alive.

Eagle Scouts Assemble 1st Aid Kits

Eagle Scout Troop 197

Recently, members of Austin’s Eagle Scout Troop 197 worked together to complete a service project in honor of MOWAM. Led by Scout Leader Stephen Yacktman the troop assembled 100 First Aid kits for MOWAM clients!  The project began in October 2008 and Yacktman dropped off the finished kits in January 2009. The kits were distributed to MOWAM clients in need.  Troop 197 of the Boy Scouts of America would like to thank friends from the Shoal Creek Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Yacktman Asset Company, and their friends and family for their support and help with this project.

MOWAM thanks Troop 197 for helping us keep our homebound clients safe!

Charity Navigator 2009

AUSTIN, TX- Charity Navigator, the nation’s premier charity evaluator, awarded Meals on Wheels and More its coveted 4-star rating for fiscal management last week. This news marks the fourth year in a row that Meals on Wheels and More has received this organization’s top honor, putting MOWAM in an elite category of nonprofits across the country.

Only 7 percent of all charities evaluated by Charity Navigator have received four consecutive 4-star ratings.

“[This rating] indicates that Meals on Wheels and More consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way and outperforms most charities in America,” Ken Berger, President & CEO of Charity Navigator, said. “This ‘exceptional’ designation from Charity Navigator differentiates Meals on Wheels and More from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust.”

Meals on Wheels and More spends 83 percent of our budget directly on clients. Each day, MOWAM distributes more than 4,000 hot meals to homebound elderly and disabled persons and other people in need throughout the Austin area.

Charity Navigator’s evaluation methods have been widely recognized in many mainstream media outlets, and the organization evaluates more charities than any of its competitors to give donors essential information about the charities to which they contribute.

DT V conversion

The upcoming DTV conversion on Feb. 17, 2009 may be a blip on the radar for the scores of cable-subscribing residents in Austin, but for homebound individuals living in poverty it threatens to have far-reaching effects.

Because of the government shortage in converter box coupons, MOWAM is asking the community for donations of any extra coupons that people do not plan to use.

Most MOWAM clients live in isolation, and television is their main means of getting information from the outside world. Because most also live on fixed incomes, they cannot afford cable.

Due to a lack of technology, many of our clients have found applying for the coupons difficult and confusing. Now, with the transition deadline looming and the government lacking resources, countless homebound men and women find themselves without a coupon and unable to afford the full cost of the converter box.

If you have a coupon that you do not plan to use, please contact MOWAM at 476-6325. MOWAM case workers plan to work with clients to purchase and install boxes for those in need.

blog

Meals on Wheels and More is proud to announce the launch of its brand new blog on Jan. 5, 2009!

The blog will be hosted on our website www.mealsonwheelsandmore.org and entries will focus on both institutional information about Meals on Wheels and More, as well as the social issues that affect our homebound elderly and disabled clients, such as hunger, depression, and nutrition, to name a few.

“We are so excited about this blog and hope it will allow us to better communicate with the Austin community. We want this forum to be a lively exchange with those who care about our mission, as well as the larger, collective missions of all basic needs organizations—to improve the lives of those in great need,” said Dan Pruett, CEO & President of Meals on Wheels and More.

christmas

With the help of volunteers and the generous sponsorship from Kershner Trading Group, Meals on Wheels and More will prepare and deliver about 500 meals to the homebound elderly and disabled this Christmas Day.

This is the third year that Meals and Wheels and More is offering this service to our clients in Central Austin.

Meal preparations will begin in our kitchen slightly before 7 a.m. Staff will arrive at 10 a.m., with training for new volunteers beginning at 10:15 a.m; meal delivery will begin 10:45 a.m.

We plan to serve about 500 clients this year and have almost 50 volunteers signed up to drive a route.

Meals and Wheels and More meal delivery is unique because we are the only organization who home-delivers meals on Christmas Day. It's also a time when we see new volunteers come out to lend a hand. Meals on Wheels and More is grateful for the support of the Austin community, our volunteers, and our bighearted sponsor Kershner Trading Group.

This year, Meals on Wheels and More, in partnership with our sponsor HEB, is proud to continue our tradition and enter into our third year of delivering holiday meals to homebound individuals in Central Austin on Thanksgiving Day.

We will serve more than 500 meals this year with the help of 46 community volunteers.

documentary premiere

At the age of 96, Meals on Wheels and More client Fannie Simnacher is finally a movie star.

On Monday, Nov. 17, 2008, Meals on Wheels and More, in partnership with Dan Rather, Time Warner Cable, and Texas Crew, will debut "Wisdom in Their Own Words," a documentary profiling the lives of several MOWAM clients.

In telling the stories of these great citizens, "Wisdom in Their Own Words" also narrates the history of the city of Austin and our country. Through segregation, World War II, and the civil rights movement, the people profiled lived through it all.

The film's premiere will be held at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum and the stars of the show will arrive by limousine at 6:30 p.m. for a red carpet entry.

"Wisdom in Their Own Words" is narrated by Meals on Wheels and More supporter Dan Rather. It was edited by Time Warner Cable and filmed by Texas Crew. In 2008, "Wisdom in Their Own Words" won two Telly awards in the documentary and editing categories.

Media is invited to attend the premiere, as well as interview the clients profiled.

mangia

It's going to take 1,124 pounds of dough, mozzarella and tomato sauce.

But the owners of Mangia Pizza are determined to cook up this massive quantity of raw materials and shatter the Guinness World Record for the longest line of pizzas.

On Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008 - just four days after the Austin restaurant celebrates its 20th birthday and two days after International Guinness World Records Day - the proprietors of Mangia Pizza, in partnership with Meals on Wheels and More, will descend on Zilker Park in Austin, Texas armed with 1,050 piping-hot cheese and pepperoni pies to create the longest line of pizzas ever assembled.

Mangia's goal is to destroy the existing record of 725 feet by piecing together over 1,000 feet of pizzas. To qualify, the pizzas must be touching crust to crust.

After the pizzas are lined up and measured by an official Guinness World Record adjudicator, employees from Mangia and Meals on Wheels and More will distribute the pizzas by van to the local Salvation Army.

"We at Mangia are so proud to be celebrating 20 years of business in Austin. And while we want to commemorate this event in a big way by setting a world record, we also want to give back to the community that has made us what we are today," said Mangia Founder and Co-Owner Jeff Sayers. "That's why we are excited to work with our longtime partners at Meals on Wheels and More and to provide more than 1,000 pizzas to the homeless men and women served by the Salvation Army."

"Mangia Pizza has been a great supporter and partner to us throughout the years, and we are thrilled to be part of this event," said Dan Pruett, the CEO and President of Meals on Wheels and More. "As a basic needs organization in Austin, we know how far-reaching the plight of hunger is in this community. We applaud Mangia's decision to celebrate their 20th anniversary by helping those in Austin who are most in need, and we are delighted to help distribute this food."

The lining up and measuring of the pizzas is expected to take place within an hour, after which the pizzas will be re-boxed and kept warm until they reach the kitchens at the Salvation Army.

Rays of Hope

If energy bills have you swooning, imagine what it's like for thousands of low-income residents in East Austin who live in older, less-efficient homes.

This Saturday, Oct. 18th, Rays of Hope (formerly known as One House at a Time), in collaboration with Meals on Wheels and More, will work to help one resident reduce his carbon footprint and his monthly bills by making energy-saving improvements to his home. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to Noon.

The volunteer-driven Rays of Hope project identifies Meals on Wheels and More clients who regularly have to choose between paying their energy bills and putting food on the table. The project aims to ease their financial burden by making their homes more efficient through repairs and new appliances, making Austin greener in the process.

Tomorrow, volunteers will work on the home of one MOWAM client, replacing existing air conditioning units, installing a water retention system, and rerouting the plumbing, among several other modifications.

Freescale Semiconductor will be sponsoring the costs for the materials, as well as providing volunteers.

Cap 10K Raises $140K for MOWAM!
Sunday, March 29, 2009

The Statesman Capitol 10,000 race  was a raging success with 18,000 runners and picture-perfect weather! Not to mention, it brought in $140,000 to help support Meals on Wheels and More. This money will help us finish the construction of a 21,000-square-foot building addition so we can keep up with the rising demand for our services in our aging community.

We’d like to extend the deepest thanks to the Austin-American Statesman and all who ran, volunteered, sponsored, spectated and helped in any way! Being the beneficiary of the Cap 10K is a terrific and fun experience, and best of all it all goes to help the thousands of homebound people in our community who are hungry and isolated. This population is one of the fastest growing in Austin. Based on projections, MOWAM expects to prepare and distribute 2.1 million meals
each year to people in need by 2020!

blog action day

Poverty has more than one face, and the faces of poverty we see most frequently at Meals on Wheels and More are perhaps not the most recognizable.

They're the faces you won't see on your trip to the corner store, when you go out to eat downtown, or when you pick your child up from school. They're the faces of the elderly and disabled individuals who are homebound, isolated, and all but invisible to most members of our community.

Recently, the Meals on Wheels Association of America surveyed people and asked what they first thought about when they heard the word hunger. Most said they thought of children or people living in Third World countries.

When told that 1 out of every 9 seniors in the U.S. were at risk for hunger, the response was one of shock. That's not uncommon. Most seniors living in poverty aren't a vocal part of their community. They are often times homebound or disabled. They lack adequate Social Security benefits, full access to medical care, and a strong family support system.

In Texas, 12.4 percent of people living in poverty are elderly. Here in Austin, 80 percent of clients who receive services from Meals on Wheels and More live below 150 percent of the poverty line. Half of our clients live alone without family to depend on, and 68 percent are over the age of 65.

Residents of Austin care deeply about many things - the environment, fitness, culture, sports. But one thing we don't talk about enough is poverty - poverty that exists right here in Austin, tucked away and hidden in our neighborhoods.

The idea that the greatness of a city or nation is judged by the way it treats its poor is an important one. When we think about poverty today, let's also think about what it means for a city, a community, or a nation to truly be "livable" for all its people. Is Austin a "livable" city? Are we as great as we can be?

meals on two wheels

The rewards of volunteering for Meals on Wheels and More in Austin, Texas just tripled.

Now, some volunteers will be able to improve the environment, get a workout, and deliver food to some of the most fragile members of our community in just one hour.

On September 15th, Meals on Wheels and More will launch the "Meals on Two Wheels" program, through which interested volunteers can elect to bike one of 12 preselected routes instead of driving, cutting down on gas costs, gas emissions, and improving their fitness.

In the program's initial phase, Meals on Wheels and More will keep a fleet of three specially-designed bicycles and cooler-holding carts at our headquarters on East Fifth Street. Volunteers assigned to one of our bike-approved routes will be able to utilize the bikes, in lieu of their cars, if they choose. Volunteers on these routes would also be able to use their own bikes and carts if they prefer.

Meals on Wheels and More has so far identified and tested 12 bike-safe routes in downtown Austin. Delivery of the meals on these routes can be completed in under an hour, in order to maintain ideal food temperatures. Successful temperature tests have been performed on the routes throughout the summer.

"Meals on Two Wheels" is made possible through the support of an anonymous technology company.

"The Meals on Two Wheels program is an exciting venture for us," said CEO and President Dan Pruett. "It's a program that is truly unique to Austin in so many ways. It's a testament to this city's passion for the environment and to our passion for serving both our clients and volunteers in a holistic way. We are committed to sustainability - of both the frail members in our community and the environment. Through Meals on Two Wheels we achieve both goals in an innovative way."

While this is the first institutional Meals on Wheels bicycle program, Meals on Wheels and More volunteers have a proud tradition of serving the homebound via bikes. Currently, employees of Capital Pedicab deliver meals once a week to clients living in downtown Austin.

Call 476-6325 or email us for more information about the program!

Capitol 10K

AUSTIN, TEXAS - (September 3, 2008) Today officials from Meals on Wheels and More and the Statesman Capitol 10,000 announced that MOWAM will be the beneficiary of the 2009 race, which will be held on Sunday, March 29, 2009.

This is the first time MOWAM has been selected to receive sponsorship proceeds from the Statesman Cap 10. MOWAM plans to allocate the funding toward the expansion of their facilities in East Austin.  In their current facility, MOWAM distributes close to one million meals annually. An addition of 21,000 square feet will be used to house new kitchen equipment and allow for MOWAM to more than double the number of meals in the coming decade.

"The growing need for our services, due to the increase in elderly residents in Austin, is a stark reality, and we must expand our kitchen and production capacity if we want to continue serving the homebound elderly and disabled individuals in our community," said CEO and President Dan Pruett. "Now, through the generous help from the Austin American-Statesman and the race's presenting sponsor Guaranty Bank, MOWAM will be much closer to reaching our fundraising goal for this important project."

"Meals on Wheels and More clearly serves some of our most vulnerable citizens-the homebound, the elderly and often, the disabled.  In many cases, their volunteers provide the only contact with the outside world as well as the main source for hot, nutritious meals.  With this segment of our population projected to grow rapidly in the next decade, we are pleased to name this vibrant organization the recipient of our 32nd race," said Michael Vivio, associate publisher of the Austin American-Statesman.

According to the Austin City Demographer, by 2020 there will be 214,000 individuals over the age of 65 living in Travis County and a significant portion of this population is expected to be either living in poverty or living with a disability severe enough to affect daily activities or both. By this time, MOWAM expects to be preparing 2.1 million meals each year - more than twice the number of annual meals we prepare now.

Currently, MOWAM distributes 4,000 meals and reaches 3,100 clients each business day. MOWAM is one of the premiere Meals on Wheels organization in the country, and operates 10 programs in addition to our meal delivery program, which allows us to serve clients more holistically.

In addition to providing a hot meal each weekday, MOWAM offers the following services to our clients:

Care Calls: Volunteer "phone friends" call isolated, homebound clients at least twice a week to check in on their welfare.

Medi Wheels: Provides rides to and from regular medical appointments for clients lacking much-needed transportation.

Groceries-to-Go: Volunteers grocery shop for clients who are unable to get to the store, but can still prepare some food.

Handy Wheels: Volunteers provide minor home repairs for homebound clients.

H.O.P.E.: Volunteers deliver an extra 20-pound bag of non-perishable groceries - provided by the Capital Area Food Bank -- to clients in need of extra food.

P.A.L.S.: Provides free pet food and periodic health screenings to pets of homebound clients.

Meals for Kids: Provides hot, afternoon meals every weekday and monthly nutrition education to over 300 low-income children in after-school programs across the city.

Country Wheels: Provides 7 frozen meals to homebound clients living in isolated, rural areas.

Client Assistance Program: Provides financial support, when available, to clients unable to purchase necessary household items or afford utility bills or rent.

Second & Seventh Meals: Provides extra shelf-stable meals to clients either daily or on the weekends.

Wisdom in Their Own Words

A Star Studded, ... Sold-out Event

On Monday November 17, 2008 Meals on Wheels and More honored their clients featured in the documentary

Wisdom In Their Own Words with a premiere at the Bob Bullock Texas History Museum.

The stars of the show really seemed to enjoy their time in the spotlight.  One memorable moment was seeing their faces beam with joy as they were wheeled down the red carpet.  After the showing of the documentary, Mrs. Brown proclaimed that she couldn't wait to tell her daughter that she was in a movie!  Overall the event was a success.

A huge thank you the event sponsors:

Film Description

Meals on Wheels and More Time Warner Cable, Texas Crew and Dan Rather teamed up to help tell the life stories of seven MOWAM clients, who have lived through some of the most trying times of the past century and whose words provide a unique and important perspective on the history of Austin and the importance of services like Meals on Wheels and More in so many people's lives.

Recently, the film was awarded 2 Telly Awards for documentary and editing.

Below meet some of the wonderful people who helped bring this project to life!

Dedicated in memory of Hervey Lazenby and George Strawsser

Hervey Lazenby

Mr. Lazenby lived through many important historical and social events during his life, including World War I, World War II, Vietnam, desegregation, and the Iraq War. Throughout his life, he was a champion for civil rights and for God. "I would like to see a time when we can really forget about race and gender ... God created us all," he said. "Why some are one color and some another, I don't know. But I think there is a purpose for it as he saw it ... he created us in his image, but right now I do not think we have a clear image of who he is. That's our doing, not his."

Mr. Lazenby passed away in 2007, but said during the making of the film that he'd led a great life. "I am just gkad I've lived these 88 years," he said. "There have been so many changes in my lifetime, and I believe they've all been for the best."

George Strawser

During WWII, George Strawser served in the National Guard and paid a big price. After being shot in the leg in Africa, Strawser was captured and held as a POW in Germany for three years. He almost didn't make it. After initially being shot, he had to march for three days on a wounded leg. He credits his friend Murray with getting him through it.

"He saved my life, there's no doubt about that ... he lent me his shoulder for a long, long time, for three days," he said. "I could hardly walk and if you fell out of line they just simply shot you ... I don't know how he carried me that far, but he did."

Active with other WWII Veterans in the Austin-area, Mr. Strawser has fought to keep his story alive.

Charity Navigator Gives Meals on Wheels and More 4-Star Rating for Fiscal Management

Austin, TX -- Charity Navigator, the nation's premiere charity evaluator, awarded Meals on Wheels and More its coveted 4-Star Rating for fiscal management in 2007. This marks the second year in a row that Meals on Wheels and More has received this rating, which is the organization's top honor.

Meals on Wheels and More earned the 4-Star rating because it has shown an exceptional ability to grow and manage its finances, said Trent Stamp, the executive director of Charity Navigator.

"Only 12 percent of the charities we've rated have received at least two consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that Meals on Wheels and More outperforms most charities in America in its efforts to operate in the most fiscally-responsible way possible," Stamp said. "This 'exceptional' designation from Charity Navigator differentiates Meals on Wheels and More from its peers and demonstrates to the public that it is worthy of their trust."

In 2005, Meals on Wheels and More spent 82 percent of its $4.2 million budget directly on its clients. Each day, 3,000 of our volunteers deliver more than 2,000 hot meals to the homebound elderly and disabled individuals in the greater Austin community.

Charity Navigator's evaluation methods have been widely recognized in many mainstream media outlets for their reliability. The organization evaluates more charities than any of its competitors in an effort to give donors essential information about the charities to which they contribute.

Meals on Wheels and A Nurtured World Partner on “One House at a Time”

Austin, TX -- One House at a Time, a new collaborative project from A Nurtured World and Meals on Wheels and More, aims to make the homes of low-income Austin residents more energy efficient, thereby decreasing burdonsome utility bills for these residents and simultaneously improving the environment.

The project began in August 2007 and has succeeded in upgrading the homes of several Meals on Wheels and More clients. One House at a Time has been recognized by many civic leaders in Austin as an important and unique project. With the poverty rate at 15.7 percent in Austin, many residents must choose between paying their utility bills and buying food. One House at Time lowers maintenance costs through weatherization and the installation of energy-efficient appliances and rain-collection systems.

"Austinites pride themselves on having a strong environmental conscious," said Dan Pruett, the CEO and President of Meals on Wheels and More. "But what has yet to be discussed is the disconnect between poverty and the environment. Those living in substandard housing can barely afford groceries, much less the new technologies that help improve a home's efficiency, lower daily living costs, and have a positive impact on the environment."

In September, Mayor Will Wynn attended a One House at a Time work event to lend his support to the project.

"As Mayor, advancing energy efficiency has been one of my top priorities -- both for its environmental benefits and for the positive impact it has on housing affordability," Wynn said. "One House at a Time demonstrates a unique and important awareness in that the organizers recognized these dual benefits and are putting them to work for the people who need them most."

Texas Legislature Passes Measure to Better Fund Meal-Delivery Programs Statewide

Austin, TX -- In 2007, the 80th Texas Legislature passed a bill sponsored by Rep. Warren Chisum (R-Pampa) and Sen. Kirk Watson (D-Austin) that will better fund nonprofit meal-delivery programs across the state. The bill took effect on September 1, 2007 and will be administered through the Texas Department of Agriculture. Meal-delivery programs are now able to apply for a partial reimbursement of their meal costs.

Called the "Odd Couple" by many for their differing political views, Rep. Chisum and Sen. Watson joined forces on sponsoring this bill because both men realized it was the right thing to do for Texas.

By assisting meal-delivery programs, like Meals on Wheels and More, in feeding the homebound elderly and disabled individuals in our communities, we are not only helping those in need, we are simultaneously saving taxpayer dollars, since the societal costs incurred from individuals in assisted living facilities are much greater than those associated with preparing and delivering a nutritional meal -- the one thing that many homebound persons need to remain living in their own homes.

The partnership between Rep. Chisum and Sen. Watson and the fact that they were able to push this legislation through the State House in just a few months is remarkable. Politics aside, Rep. Chisum and Sen. Watson recognize that we as Texans have a common interest in helping the most fragile members of our society and a common priority to be fiscally responsible.

On Oct. 9, 2007, Meals on Wheels and More held the "Eye2Eye Luncheon" at the Four Seasons Hotel in Austin to recognize and celebrate these two men. Meals on Wheels and More is grateful for the dedication and support of both Rep. Chisum and Sen. Watson.

Donna Howard

Austin, TX - Rep. Donna Howard (D-Austin) accompanied Meals on Wheels and More CEO Dan Pruett on a meal-delivery route Friday, Nov. 16, 2007 in Austin. Rep. Howard and Mr. Pruett visited and spoke with several of MOWAM's elderly and homebound clients on their route.

Rep. Howard has long been a supporter of MOWAM's mission, and we thank her for her grassroots support, especially during the holiday season when our clients are most in need.

Meals on Wheels and More delivers approximately 500 meals on Thanksgiving Day

Austin, TX -- With the help of several dozen volunteers and the generous sponsorshipp of HEB, Meals on Wheels and More prepared and delivered approximately 500 holiday meals to the homebound and disabled this past Thanksgiving Day.

This marks the second year that Meals on Wheels and More has overseen the preparation and delivery of these meals, which are cooked and packaged at our headquarters in East Austin. The service was offered to our 1,300 clients living in Central Austin. Meal preparations began before 7 a.m. and volunteers arrived to pick up meals around 10 a.m. Volunteers serviced 50 routes throughout Central Austin.

In 2006, Meals on Wheels and More assumed complete responsibility of this program, which was previously facilitated through a partnership with the Salvation Army. Last year, we served 450 clients on Thanksgiving and 350 clients on Christmas Day.

The Meals on Wheels and More holiday meal delivery is unique because we are the only organization in Austin that delivers hot meals to the front doors of the needy in our community. It's also a time when we see many new volunteers come out to lend a hand. Meals on Wheels and More is proud to offer this service to our clients, and we are grateful to the Austin community, our dedicated volunteers, and our bighearted sponsor HEB.

MOWAM Largest Recipient of a State Grant to Help Feed Homebound Texans

On Jan. 14, Texas Department of Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples announced that Meals on Wheels and More will receive $1.4 million through a state-wide grant program that aims to better serve and feed homebound Texans by better funding meal-delivery programs.

MOWAM received the largest grant awarded through the 'Texans Feeding Texans Act', a new piece of legislation spearheaded last year by Rep. Warren Chisum (R-Pampa) and Sen. Kirk Watson (D-Austin). Meal-delivery organizations in Texas are eligible to apply for the grant through the TDA.

This grant will help MOWAM further our mission of feeding homebound disabled and elderly individuals in the greater Austin area by enabling us to increase our meal production by 200,000 meals in the coming year. In 2007, we provided 876,000 meals to homebound individuals and low-income children.

While significant, MOWAM President and CEO Dan Pruett stresses that MOWAM is still in great need of community support. "This money will go a long way in helping us prepare more meals, but it will also mean more work for the organization," he said. "We are excited for the challenge and opportunity to reach more people in need, but still ask for help from our donors and volunteers."

Details of the grant were announced at a January press conference with Mr. Staples, Mr. Chisum and Mr. Watson.

Kirk Watson Delivers for MOWAM Clients

This holiday season, Sen. Kirk Watson is spreading a little sugar and spice around.

On Friday, he plans to deliver tamales (hand made by two senate employees) to several homebound Meals on Wheels and More clients in Austin as a special treat with their regular meal. Meals on Wheels and More CEO Dan Pruett will join him.

This occasion is made extra special by the fact that earlier this year Sen. Watson co-sponsored House Bill 407 with Rep. Warren Chisum (R-Pampa). The bill authorizes additional state funding for Meals on Wheels organizations across the State of Texas.

"Meals on Wheels and More is so grateful to Sen. Watson for his legislative work on behalf of the elderly and disabled residents of our state," said Pruett. "And I know our clients here in Austin will be excited to receive some delicious homemade tamales with their Friday meal."

Media is welcome to accompany Sen. Watson on this route and interview clients.

Rep. Warren Chisum (R-Pampa) & Sen. Kirk Watson (D-Austin) sponsored legislation in 2007 that provides more state funding to Meals on Wheels organizations across Texas.
